Welcome To Year 6!

Year 6- Challenging, rewarding and exciting! Great attitude means great fun! Represent our school – uniform, shoes, behaviour, manners. Appreciate those around you and work as a team.

Getting ready for Year 6 Know your times tables Read for pleasure Note down vocabulary Get the right equipment for completing homework- pens, pencils, ruler, sharpener, protractor, dictionary, thesaurus etc. Have you got your own quiet space to work?

Getting ready for Year 6 A pencil case with suitable classroom equipment: pens, pencils, ruler, rubber, glue stick, highlighters, coloured pencils. A strong folder to keep books/ documents in will be useful. You need a good school bag for storing all of your things- see Year 6 for examples.

P.E Children will need their sports kit in school every day NAMED indoor and outdoor kits are needed. You will need a strong bag to store your kit (with a plastic bag inside to keep dirty trainers in) Kit is taken home every Friday to be washed and brought back every Monday.

Homework Timetable Diaries Expectations Lesson time is precious – be organised! Keep everything you need in your work bag and it goes where you go

Mysterious Worlds/BrightSparks Autumn Term- Mysterious Worlds/BrightSparks Most of the work we do in the Autumn Term revolves around this topic. Some of the activities vary from year to year, depending on the children’s interests, but this year we will: Investigate Mayan civilisation and customs Investigate stories from other cultures, write persuasive texts and adventure stories Electricity and Light; burglar alarms Visiting the Manchester Christmas markets

Spring Term- Urban Antics/It’s Alive! This year, we have looked at: Poetry Slam, report writing and discussion texts Animals and Humans Living Things and Habitats Urban and Rural Landscapes Graffiti Art

Summer Term- All the Fun of the Fair! This year, we are looking at: Investigating fairground rides Writing explanations – cracking contraptions Designing our own stalls for the Summer Fair Evolution and Inheritance, including The Wild Roadshow LONDON TRIP

SATs/ Assessments All tests will be level 4 – 6 New format for Maths – paper 1 (purely arithmetic), paper 2 and paper 3 (contextualised questions). No calculator. No mental maths. No separate level 6 papers at all Testing before Christmas and mock SATs in March Writing assessment is ongoing Science may be tested as part of sampling

Key Expectations for Y6 Spelling – must know Y3/4 words as well as Y5/6 and be able to spell them in independent writing Emphasis on vocabulary in reading and writing Editing and re-drafting work Grammatical terminology and apply it in independent writing Secure formal methods of calculation

Being responsible Responsibilities around school and the classroom. Mobile phones E-safety Walking to /from school (trips)
