Parents and Carers Forum Teaching, Learning and Assessment

Aims of the session To keep you informed with an honest evaluation of where we are as a school. 2) To involve you in the process of improving the school by taking on board your feedback

What have we been up to since September? Parents and Carers Information Evenings Preparing students to repeat the exam success of last year Launch of Show My Homework Working on challenging students more Continue to improve attendance, punctuality and behaviour Provide more leadership opportunities for students Reform of KS3 Assessment Closer links with Primary schools

My emerging thoughts… We can be an “outstanding” school in 12 months Ensure that we continue to challenge all students all of the time Ensure that marking and assessment is more consistent Continue to deliver excellent results

Assessment Miss Pope, Assistant Headteacher for Teaching and Learning

Written feedback – what to expect. Your child’s work will be looked at regularly and marked to show that this has happened. Your child will receive more detailed feedback on key pieces of work. This will sometimes, although not always, include a number or grade. Your child will be told how well they have done, and what they need to do to improve. Your child will be given time to improve – either through re-drafting, re-testing or through a new piece of work which develops the same skills.

Some of the different ways this might look. Stars and a wish:

Use of subject specific codes:

Success criteria:

Marking for Literacy:

Marking crib-sheets:

PLCs:

‘Show My Homework’ update What’s going well… Even better if… Knowledge tests uploaded with answers on a separate sheet so students can self-assess . We are clear in expectations for research tasks. (I.E Not just ‘Find examples’ but ‘Find ten examples.’) Use of success criteria to set expectations for homework. Pointers such as ‘For higher marks’. With long pieces of homework, use interim deadlines as well. Help-sheets with key information uploaded where students are being asked to revise. Keep attached power-point slides clear and simple. PLCs uploaded to actively guide students through revision tasks. We set realistic deadlines for completion – especially at Key Stage Three. Processes explained clearly – ‘How to check your knowledge’. Research tasks with appropriate web-links to direct students.

KS3 Assessment & Monitoring A Parent Forum Guide

Assessment of Progress Formative Assessment Summative Assessment Including assessment of work done in class and for homework throughout the course of the year; leading to written and verbal feedback to support progress of learning. Carried out in a more formal manner during our KS3 Assessment Windows in December and June. Including examinations for core subjects that will take place in the Main Hall and other examination venues in order to help prepare your child for what lies ahead in Key Stage 4 (KS4). The results of the summative assessment provide a clear indication of progress of learning.

Providing Support at Home With your child learning from every experience that they have, in and out of school, there are many ways in which you can provide support at home. The following are some general tips (with more on our website): Listen, talk, and encourage – this can have a big influence on children's learning. Encourage any reading – could be through providing material, reading together and letting them see you read. Help them work on tasks on their own and then talk about it with you afterwards.

Reporting of Progress The following information will appear on our KS3 reports: Attendance Achievement & Behaviour Points Working to Achieve grade Professionally Predicted Grade Progress to Date Assessment Performance Attitude to Learning
