The Asia Pacific region development issues and case studies FORUM ON NEXT GENERATION STANDARDIZATION (Colombo, Sri Lanka, 7-10 April 2009) The Asia Pacific region development issues and case studies Clifford Wignell Dir NSA, Colombo, Sri Lanka, 7-10 April 2009

Introduction Why Standards? NGN Asia Pacific What and Why Why is it different Colombo, Sri Lanka, 7-10 April 2009

Imagine a world where bolts were not standardised! Why Standards? The humble bolt First invented around 400 BC Every one different Standardization started around 18001 In progress Still! “The wonderful thing about standards is that there are so many of them to choose from”2 Imagine a world where bolts were not standardised! Henry Maudslay UK Grace Hopper Colombo, Sri Lanka, 7-10 April 2009

ICT is much more complex than a bolt, NGN Has more interfaces, Why Standards? ICT is much more complex than a bolt, NGN Has more interfaces, No vendor does it all, And The PSTN, PLMN and Internet are: a large number of networks Joined Lots of companies interacting Largest and most reliable machine MBM1 MADE BY MAN Colombo, Sri Lanka, 7-10 April 2009

Next Generation Networks What is NGN? Umbrella phrase for:- A packet based service To provide telecommunications services First commercial instance in late 90’s Seeks to optimize the operating networks Single core/application layer regardless of access Seeks to “Converge” fixed and mobile. Colombo, Sri Lanka, 7-10 April 2009

Asia Pacific Asia Pacific is not the United States APAC is diverse, the complete market spectrum, sometimes all in the one country APAC Carriers have challenges which are both global and unique to the region Colombo, Sri Lanka, 7-10 April 2009

Challenge 1 Line growth vs old technology In the US, on of the drivers is competition with say Cable operators In APAC, only:- 17% have access to a fixed line, 30% to Mobile and 13% to the Internet The challenge is in part to close the ICT divide with out investing in obsolesce. Colombo, Sri Lanka, 7-10 April 2009
