Today’s Class Today we are going to talk about two early civilizations that were extremely influential in shaping Ancient Greece The Minoans The Mycenaean Civilization

The Minoans The Minoans were NOT Greek, however their culture, art, and language had a tremendous impact on Ancient Greece Minoan Civilization developed during the Bronze Age around the year 2800 BCE and lasted until around 1450BCE

The Minoans Minoan Civilization was primarily on the Island of Crete Find Crete on the map to the right What is interesting or unique about where the Minoan Civilization is compared to other Civilizations we have talked about?

The Minoans The name Minoan comes the legendary King of Crete Minos King Minos is said to have built a great labyrinth to keep the Minotaur at bay The Minotaur is said to be the son of Minos’ wife

The Labyrinth

The Palace at Knossos The center of Minoan civilization was the city of Knossos There was a massive palace built at Knossos The palace at Knossos was the center of Minoan Civilization

The Palace at Knossos The Palace at Knossos was built around the year 2000 BCE The palace was destroyed by a major earthquake and rebuilt around 1700 BCE The palace was also damaged and rebuilt due to a number of fires

The Palace at Knossos There is evidence of many important things taking place in at the Palace at Knossos Things Which Happened at the Palace: Tax Collection Specialized Work Major Storage of good In depth record keeping Economic and Political cross-cultural interactions

Minoan Art Minoan palaces were decorated by many paintings of sports, festivals, and nature scenes These types of paintings have been found as far away as Egypt What can we learn from this fact?

Minoan Economics The Island of Crete is very mountainous The mountains of Crete forced the Minoans to grow orchard crops like grapes and olives

Minoan Economics Minoans were excellent traders This was because of their closeness to Egypt, Asia Minor, and Mainland Greece

Minoan Economics Minoans were also great seafarers This made trade easy for them Traded things like textiles, pottery, and olive oil

Mycenaean Civilization Mycenaean Greece also existed during the Bronze Age The name comes the city of Mycenae Mycenaean Civilization was thought to be purely mythical until the 1870’s An amateur archeologist Heinrich Schliemann was responsible for discovering tangible evidence of Mycenaean Civilization

Mycenaean Civilization The famed civilizations from Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey Mycenaean Civilization lasted from about 1900BCE-1200BCE

Mycenaean Civilization Mycenaean Civilization was heavily influence by the Minoans Adopted Minoan language, art, and sailing techniques Minoan Painted Jug Painted Jug from Mycenae

Mycenaean Society Mycenaean Civilization was made up of loosely allied warrior kings lead city-states There is much more evidence of warfare and military expansion by the Mycenaean Civilization than the Minoans

Mycenaean Society Much knowledge of Mycenaean society comes from graves and burial sites Mostly men, especially important men were buried in specified areas Found Artifacts include: Swords, daggers, helmets, and shields Crowns and jewelry Banquet cups

Let’s Get Critical Take a minute to think about the following questions Why are graves such excellent sources of information? What are some potential problems with relying heavily on graves?
