Poetry

What is a poem? Arrangement of words containing meaning & musicality. Most poems are a series of lines separated into groups called stanzas. A poem can be rhyming or non-rhyming. A poem can have regular meter or a free flow of poly-rhythms.

Alliteration the repetition of the same first sound in a group of words Cipher Connected - By Paul McCann Careless cars cutting corners create confusion . Crossing centrelines. Hyperbole an extreme exaggeration Ex: “He was so hungry he could have eaten a horse.”

Metaphor a comparison between two things, saying something is something else Ex: “My love is a red rose.”

Simile a comparison using like or as Ex: My love is like a red, red rose.”

Onomatopoeia sound effect words Ex: “clip, clop…” (for the sound of a horses’ hooves) Blaaagugugh (Puking)

Personification when non-human things (animals, objects or ideas) are described as if they were human Ex: “The leaves danced in the courtyard.”
