Reflection Do you feel that one opinion is better than another? Recall the two views of deafness that you learned at the beginning of the year – the medical view and the view of the Deaf culture. What concerns and fears did the Deaf relatives and the people in the Deaf community have about the cochlear implant? What concerns and fears did the Hearing relatives have regarding the cochlear implant? Do you think that parents should leave the decision up to a child? If a child gets a cochlear implant, does that cure the hearing loss? What kind of commitment does the family have to make if an implant is given to the child? If you were a parent of a Deaf child, would you have the child get a cochlear implant? Why or why not? Do you think it is important for children who have a hearing loss to identify with the Deaf community and understand ASL and Deaf culture? Why or why not?
