Think about it Which of the following statements is an observation and which is an inference? The sky is grey and cloudy. The sky is dark, It is going to rain.

What is an observation? An observation is a statement describing a fact. When you observe, you become aware of something using one of your senses. Your five senses are: smell, taste, sight, touch, & sound

Making Observations In the space below, make a list of 3 observations in this classroom. 1. 2. 3.

Quantitative Observation Sometimes scientists must make very careful and precise observations. Often their senses are not good enough. There are some things that cannot be observed using just your senses. (Example: measurements)

Extending our senses… What instruments can we use in the science laboratory to extend our senses?

What is an inference? An inference is a statement based on your interpretation of the facts. Inferences cannot be directly observed. They require thought. Ex: If you look up in the morning at the sky and observe dark clouds, observe the air is cool and humid, and observe puddles on the ground… What can you infer???.

Did you say it rained??? Remember… you did not see rain; you decided that it rained based on your observations.

Examples Observations That plant is extremely wilted. The car stopped running The Mets are leading there division Inferences That plant is extremely wilted due to a lack of water. The car stooped running because it was out of gas. The Mets are leading there division because they are playing well right now.

What observations can we make from these pictures?

Let’s practice making inferences! The next three slides show some fossil imprints that were found during a archeological dig. We’re going to record some observations and then make some inferences about what may have happened millions of years ago….

The study of the forest this year counted more deer than the forest can support. The patient has a sore throat that is red with white spots. The patient may have a throat infection. There where fewer reports of the flu this year. The flu vaccine must be effective.
