Pre-service PGCE (M) Induction Friday 20th September 2013

Themes Introduction to 6PC012 Microteaching experience You will also be given opportunities to evaluate the Induction process and engage in further, independent study.

Working in the Post Compulsory Sector 6PC012

The design We have designed the module to support you in meeting: LSIS standards for PTLLS, the first teaching Award (2011) and in working towards LSIS standards for DTLLS/ DET (2011)

Overarching themes are: (LSIS, 2011) Roles, responsibilities and relationships in lifelong learning Understanding inclusive learning and teaching in lifelong learning Using inclusive learning and teaching approaches in lifelong learning Principles of assessment in lifelong learning Curriculum development for inclusive practice Wider professional practice

How will we refer to these themes? Our themes reflect the key areas on your lesson observation form: Preparation and planning Learning and teaching Equal opportunities and safeguarding Resources Assessment and feedback Personal qualities and professionalism

The PCE context There is one more theme that is not on your lesson observation form. As with all of the themes, it will be developed in the course: Curriculums and contexts

September to November You will get to know all of the tutors on the course You will be taught in different groupings for most of the module There will be a range of teaching and learning strategies used We will recommend key readings and websites to you

Where shall we start? September 26th morning: Introducing Curriculums and Contexts Sharing your reading of the Induction article* (Jephcote and Salisbury 2009) *Remember to bring it with you

September 26th afternoon: Introducing the module in more detail Sharing your Learning Autobiography* Personal Qualities and Professionalism *Remember to bring it with you

Getting started You might have a look at the Geoff Petty book, Teaching Today And also check out his website More will be recommended in the module guide!

Module Assessments The delivery of a microteaching session [15 minutes] A report of 2000 words based on an evaluation of your microteaching session This will be discussed as part of the module sessions

When? 17th October all day 24th October all day or 24th October all day In the first instance, please be prepared to do the microteaching session on the 17th October. We will pick names out of a hat nearer the time.

Who to? You will deliver to a group of peers and your Constructing Self and Identity tutor. You can be videoed and should let your Self and Identity tutor know nearer the time.

What will it be on? It is your choice. It does need to be on an aspect of your subject specialism.

What will you need? A completed University lesson planner We will provide you with the University lesson planner on the module. You will also be able to access an interactive planner. We will deliver materials on lesson planning and signpost other materials to you.

Accompanying resources We will talk about resources on the module. You might create or adapt resources. It is likely that you will be in groups of about 20 so you might want to think about how to share/use/distribute resources.

We don’t have these any more!

How will it be assessed? Your Constructing Self and Identity tutor will give you feedback. Your peers will also give you feedback. You will be asked to evaluate your microteaching. It will inform the report and the assessment criteria will be in the module guide.

Any Questions?

Hints and tips Be well prepared Be/seem confident Have eye contact with your peers Keep things simple Can you think of any more? We will cover these in more detail in the module

What makes a ‘good’ teacher? Task What makes a ‘good’ teacher? In small groups, use the magazines, glue, pens etc to create a poster showing a ‘good’ teacher. Be prepared to justify your ideas.

Well done!
