Heroes of the Ancient World These people led their countries, fought against great armies, explored new lands and did amazing things. People didn’t always like them, but they won a place in history forever.

Alexander the Great, 356 – 323 BC was a Macedonian king. He conquered most of the known world. He died when he was 32.

Manco Cápac, was a South American leader. 12th century was a South American leader. According to the legend, he was the man who started the Inca Empire.

Tutankhamum, 1341-1323 BC was an Egyptian king. He spent his time as king building monuments and temples. Today his burial mask is the iconic image of ancient Egypt.

Genghis Khan, Ca. 1162-1227 was a Mongol leader and warlord. He started the Mongol Empire by joining together lots of tribes in northeast Asia. People think of him as the founder of Mongolia.

Marco Polo, Ca. 1254-1324 was an Italian explore. He travelled the 7,000-km-long Silk Road from Europe to China. He set out in 1271 and returned home 24 years later. His journey helped to create new maps.

Cleopatra, 69-30 BC was an Egyptian queen and the last of the Pharaohs to rule Egypt. According to many poets and historians, Cleopatra died after a poisonous snake bit her.

Julius Caesar, 100-44 BC was a Roman ruler. He started and won a civil war and reformed Roman society and government. A group of senators murdered him because they wanted to change things back. He said “I came,I saw, I conquered” after winning a battle in Asia Minor.
