Religion and COmmunity cohesion Lesson 3: The UK - Multi ethnic society and community cohesion

L.O: to explore the idea of the UK As a multi ethnic society and the impact of Community cohesion Learning outcomes: To understand the main ethic minorities within the UK and reasons for this To consider the problems of racism To be able to explain the Government action to promote community cohesion

Key words Ethnic minority: A member of an ethnic group (race) which is much smaller than the majority group Multi-ethnic society: Many different races and cultures living together in one society Racism: The belief that some races are superior to others Community cohesion: A common vision and shared sense of belonging for all groups in society

Multi-Ethnic society The UK has historically been a place where people of many nationalities and ethnicities have lived. As we are an island we have been a place that people have travelled to and moved to for many reasons. In the past, the UK has taken over lots of different countries and people have started lives there. However, now people are moving to the UK for better standards of living and for jobs, to escape conflict and persecution.

Give three reasons... Why there is a mixture of ethnic groups in the UK?

What does... Discrimination mean? Give me the definition.

Problems of prejudice and discrimination Treating people less favourably because of their ethnicity or discriminating against someone because of their race is a problem that arises in countries that have many races living together (multi-ethnic societies). When discrimination is because of a person’s race or ethnic background it is often called racism. What reasons can you think of for people being racist?

reasons for racism Some people say it is the way some people are brought up It could be a lack of education about different races Some say it is a reaction to people who are different from themselves Discrimination is illegal - but how can it be policed 100% of the time?

Problems caused by discrimination and racism Prevents society working as well as it could Conflict between people or groups of people Individuals are not valued for who they are Problems caused by discrimination and racism Unfair judgements are made about people It leads to people being left out of society People have different chances in education (school)

What do you think... b) Do you think discrimination causes problems in society? Give two reasons for your point of view. I think discrimination does/does not cause problems in society... because... Also,... because...

London riots 2011 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7JaDMynG Ao

Read the story... On page 92 of the textbook. What is this fathers message?

Community cohesion As seen in by the example we have just heard the riots in summer 2011, differences between people, whether due to ethnic type or other factors such as religion, can cause conflicts and problems within communities. The Government has recognised that something needs to be done to bring people together. Community cohesion is to encourage people to work together for the good of everyone.

Government action to promote community cohesion in the UK What do you think the Government does to promote community cohesion? Use page 93 to help you Government action to promote community cohesion in the UK

Exam questions a) What is a multi-ethnic society? (2) Hint: Give the correct definition c) Explain why discrimination and racism are a problem in the UK. (8) Hint: 4 paragraphs! P.E.E each one!!! Many questions are based on the key words, make sure you know the meaning of all the words!

Peer assess Have they given 4 paragraphs? Developed each one? And explained the point? How many marks out of 8 does it deserve? Give a positive comment How do they improve? Sign the peer assessment
