LAMLA 2016: Results from the workshop Listening for Aquatic Mammals in Latin America  Renata Sousa-Lima1, Susannah J. Buchan2, Artur Andriolo3 and Julia Dombroski4 1 Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil; 2Universidad de Concepcion, Chile; 3Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora, Brazil; 4University of Syracuse Aim: To develop the field of aquatic mammal bioacoustics in Latin America by providing a platform for exchanging knowledge and promoting regional collaborations. Specifically, Identify the research groups, target species, methods and passive acoustic monitoring effort involved in bioacoustic studies of aquatic mammals in Latin America. Exchange of knowledge between researchers and students during workshops to promote regional collaboration. Create a website as a portal for interaction, including an interactive map of research groups and their contact information; downloadable education and outreach materials; news and information on upcoming events. Who we are? A steering committee of 3: Renata Sousa-Lima, Artur Andriolo and Susannah Buchan An organizing committee of 7: Renata Sousa-Lima, Artur Andriolo, Susannah Buchan, Julia Dombroski, Julie Patris, Franck Malige, Naysa Balcazar-Cabrera + others from future LAMLAs. 74 participants from 9 countries: Argentina, Brasil, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Guyana, France, Mexico, Peru, United Kingdom, United States. Invited speakers: Chris Clark (Cornell Lab of Ornithology), Cornelia Oedekoven (University of St. Andrews), Carmen Bazúa-Durán (Universidad Autonoma de Mexico), Artur Andriolo (Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora), Mariana Melcon (University of California San Diego), Renata Sousa-Lima (Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte). Outcomes A clear need to building technical capacity in Latin America (technical training workshops with specific softwares an instruments) An initial online survey: 49 research groups answered from Argentina, Australia, Belize, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Malvinas, Guatemala, Guyana, Mexico, Panama, Peru, United States, United Kingdom, Uruguay.
