Welcome to AP CS Principles! September 5, 2017

What is cs principles? Two overarching themes: 1) Thinking “computationally” (i.e., creative problem solving) 2) Computing innovations affect our lives for better and for worse. Though this is not strictly a programming class, there will be a substantial programming component. We will begin programming in C++ in mid-late October.

How does Cohen really feel?

Ap exam The AP exam consists of three parts: “Explore” Performance Task (16%)  describe a computational artifact and its effects. “Create” Performance Task (24%)  create a program and explain its functionality. Two-hour multiple-choice exam (74 questions) (60%). The College Board requires students be given 20 hours of class time (12 classes) for the PTs. Eight hours for “Explore”; 12 hours for “Create.” The multiple-choice exam will take place on Friday, May 11, 2018.

What will class be like? Assignments will typically fall into one of the following categories: Worksheets Short AP practice responses Writing C++ code/programs Longer-term writing assignments (1-2 per quarter) There will be some very high-level discrete math. Not calculus—think logic and number theory. Curriculum: “CS50” by Harvard.

How am I graded? Major assignments: 70% Includes quizzes, tests, and practice PTs (i.e., direct practice for the AP exam). Not eligible for redo. Minor assignments (everything else): 30% Eligible for redo at teacher’s discretion (THS policy).

Class policies You are expected to be in your seat working when the bell rings. Show work on assignments. Respect your peers! Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Have fun!!
