Practical Applications of Geography Francisci WG.12

An understanding of geography will enable you to be an informed and active member of your community. Examples: Air- and water-quality monitoring and management: Safe drinking water (wells, reservoirs, dams, pipelines, oceans) and air quality (testing for and reducing pollution, toxic fumes). Recycling Programs: reducing trash in landfills, living green and being aware of limited resources, reducing amount of disposable products, reducing highway trash.

An understanding of geography will enable you to be an informed and active member of your community. Examples: Land-use and transportation planning: zoning and law restrictions, community planning for parks, building expansions, planning for walking trails and bicycle paths, maintaining roads and highways and mass transit. Selecting locations for residential and commercial development: planning for shopping centers, hospitals, libraries, schools, sports complexes, monitoring the location and sizes of public buildings.

Currents events (such as news stories) are shaped by the physical characteristics of the places and regions in which they occur. Examples: Natural Hazards - Flooding - Earthquakes Climate, vegetation Volcanoes Drought

Examples of how places and regions influence current events: Population distribution (where people live) Geographic patterns of ethnic diversity (where ethnic groups are located such as Chinatown or in regions like the Arabs of the Middle East.

Examples of how places and regions influence current events: A sense of place (emotional attachment to specific locations) Patterns of trade and interdependence (countries trading for oil, comparative advantage) Patterns of wealth and poverty (developed countries tend to be wealthy)
