Writing Prompt- Recycling Students in Charleston are cleaning up- cleaning up waste. As a result of their efforts, waste disposal costs have decreased, students have learned how to be conservative, and important natural resources have been saved. Write a persuasive letter to our principal suggesting that we go paperless. You may have suggestions on how this can be accomplished.

Warm-Up What are Natural Resources? Name & Define the 2 categories that Natural Resources can belong to.

7-4.6 Classify resources as renewable or nonrenewable and explain the implications of their depletion and the importance of conservation. Vocabulary: Implications depletion conservation

Implication A likely consequence of something

Depletion Use of a resource faster than it is replenished

Conservation Act of conserving or protecting from loss

Renewable Resources They are replaced through natural processes at a rate that is equal to or greater than the rate at which they are being used.

Renewable Resources Renewable Resources: Air Water Soil Living things Sunlight

New Soil? Forms very slowly ???? New Soil? Forms very slowly Trees/plants? Grow to replace those that have been cut down or died. Animals? Born to replace animals that have died.

Nonrenewable Resources Coal Oil Natural Gas Diamonds Metals Minerals

Nonrenewable resources They exist in a fixed amount. They can only be replaced by processes that take millions of years. They are exhaustible. Used faster than they are formed

Think? Nonrenewable resources are being extracted and used at a much faster rate than the rate at which they are formed. Why is this?

Research Choose oil, coal, natural gas, or diamonds and find out what the production is and where these resources are located.

Name on Paper/ turn in to me Explain why natural resources are important. At least 5 sentences. Choose your topic for research and tell me everything you know about this topic. Create 5 questions about your topic.
