Welcome to ART! Ms. Castillo MYP ART

What we cover in 8th Grade Art Students will learn the following this year: The basics of art such as understanding the Elements and Principles. The basics of drawing: how to see as an artist, how to develop technical skill and craftsmanship, & how to create successful compositions. How to view, appreciate and discuss art, as well as learn about various historic and cultural art forms. They will be introduced to and get to experiment with new art media and techniques.

Grading is based Upon: Knowing & Understanding: Students demonstrate knowledge of art terminology, art history, and materials introduced. Developing Skills: Students demonstrate development in drawing or art techniques learned. This can range from drawing, painting, and sculpting. Thinking Creatively: Students demonstrate unique and personal creativity in the development of ideas for artwork and process journal assignments. Responding: Students are able to give and receive meaningful feedback on their own artwork and the artwork of peers.

Sadly, Rubrics do not include a section for effort. It is important for students and parents to understand that art may not come as easily to students as other curriculum. Automatic 100’s should not be expected. It is also key for parents to understand that in the IB program, Art, is considered just as important as other courses offered. Some students will have to put forth more time and practice to understand and master certain skills. This is not unlike other courses where a student may be having trouble. One on one help and tutoring is ALWAYS available. In some instances extra credit work that can help develop skills is offered.

This is an example of student progress after 1 year under my instruction. The left side is how they drew a self-portrait when the year started. The right is at the end of the year after learning many new techniques in drawing.

THE PROCESS JOURNAL: INTERACTIVE LEARNING TOOLS used for LP Research assignments: Monthly Assignments starting September. Document learning, processes, and develop new skills. sketches, brainstorming, and much, much, more!!
