Year 12 Medical Science Society (MSS – ‘medsoc’) Who it is for: Year 12 students seriously considering applying for Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science at university. What it involves: A fortnightly commitment attending sessions held on Thursday after college at 3.40pm – 4.40pm. Sessions will include group research tasks, discussions, lectures, visits and sessions help by guest speakers. You will be expected to complete any research tasks set. You will receive full guidance and support in your application for a place at medical/ dental/ veterinary school. How to apply: Go onto the MSS (Medsoc)Moodle Page. Download an application form, fill it in on the computer so it is clear, and then print it off. Hand in to the MSS tray on Jon’s desk in M009 (Biology Office). Sign your name on the sheet as a record that you’ve handed it in. Deadline is 3.30pm on Friday 10th November 2016. Applications handed in later will not be considered PLACES ARE LIMITED! You will be notified by email by 24th November if you have been successful in gaining a place. First session will be an introductory session soon after this. For more information, contact Jon: javon@cardinalnewman.ac.uk NB: you cannot simultaneously be a member of medsoc and be participating in the PWAP programme. You may apply for both but if your PWAP place is confirmed your medsoc application is withdrawn. You can then join Medsoc in year 13 (after the PWAP programme has finished) to receive support with your UCAS application) provided you have completed PWAP successfully and have made good progress in your year 12 studies.

Year 12 Medical Science Society (MSS) Criteria to meet to be considered for a place in MSS: Outstanding GCSE grades – majority being A* and A grades Studying Chemistry and Biology at A-level Preferably studying Maths at A-level Excellent Progress Reports from your class teachers Show a clear interest in, and enthusiasm for, Medicine, Dentistry or Vet Sci on your application form

Other Science enrichment opportunities: Science Club – fortnightly Wednesday 2:45pm – 3:45pm – held in M005 (alternating with Year 12 MSS) - Biology, Chemistry and Physics activities and practicals. See Amy (Chemistry), Dave (Physics), Cassie or Nigel (Biology) for more details. Even if you are not successful in gaining a place in MSS, you may still attend any advertised talks from guest speakers – these will be held in one of the lecture theatres.
