WHAT ARE WE DOING TODAY?

THIS MORNING: DISCOVERING With your school team, you will share observations and learn about others’ empathy-building efforts.

THIS MORNING: DISCOVERING Your team will then seek insights (deeper understandings) from these observations while re-examining how you define your system's end-users.

THIS MORNING: DISCOVERING Your team will use these learnings to define a challenge based on the unmet needs of your end-users.

THIS AFTERNOON: EXPERIMENTING With others in the network, you will use design thinking to create potential solutions for a school’s challenge.

THIS AFTERNOON: EXPERIMENTING This will prepare you to engage in testing these solutions in small ways in your school or district.

THIS AFTERNOON: DISTRICT TIME After working with your school and across the network, you will meet with others in your district to share and plan.

WHAT QUESTIONS ARE THERE WHAT QUESTIONS ARE THERE? Take one minute to process, then please raise your hand to ask a question.

LET’S GET STARTED!

QUICK SHARE Share with a partner about your empathy building experience.

With your school team (and your facilitator): DISCOVERING With your school team (and your facilitator): Share observations Seek deeper understanding (insights) Re-examine end-users Learn about Big Ideas (at 10:45) Define a challenge

BIG IDEAS FROM DEEPER LEARNING

Please rejoin your school team in 15 minutes. http://schoolretool.org/big-ideas Please rejoin your school team in 15 minutes.

Insight Big Idea

Your team’s job... Insight Big Idea Identify 1 Big Idea that connects to the insight you identified during your discovery phase.

Big Idea + unmet need= Design Challenge Define your challenge! Big Idea + unmet need= Design Challenge Sentence Stems to help: How might we design_______ to better _________? How might we improve _______ for ________? Example: How might we design student led conferences to better empower students to own their learning goals and use data to inform their growth?

Post your team’s How Might We by 12:20pm

Dot voting begins at 12:20pm! Please finish your lunch, vote, and be ready to start by 12:35

Why do we use design thinking?

Why do we use design thinking? This is a 50-minute process! Why do we use design thinking?

WHAT’S NEXT?

Before you leave today: Share your personal aspiration for your school at www.tinyurl.com/PLASP Meet with your district team Provide feedback at http://tinyurl.com/PL1025 Before January 12: Continue empathy-building: use what you learned today to dig deeper! Test a prototype developed during the Design Thinking Session. Didn't get a prototype today? Use the design thinking process at your school, or use Quick Wins! Start planning for Paul and Jon's visit to your school: how do you want to use this time? As a school team, create a draft version of an aspiration for your school. (We will discuss this during your school visit)

RISE UP Think of the name of one student who motivates you, a student who is your reason for doing the important work you do. If you are comfortable, please take a turn to stand, share the student’s first name, and remain standing.

DISTRICT TIME Please meet with your district leads to learn how to use this time. Paul and Jon are also available to support your team. Thank you for your time!
