Mindset Mini PD Each table needs… 2 pieces of chart paper, markers, paper for notes, post it notes

Growth Mindset Defined Belief that things can change/improve Effects decisions related to moving forward Fixed mindset – I can’t change/fix this Growth mindset – With some work/perseverance this can be improved

Mindset is Perspective Those with a Fixed Mindset tend to give up. They believe situations are final. “It is what it is”, there’s nothing that can be done to change it. Those with a Growth Mindset tend to keep trying. The goal is to change/improve. The current situation is a beginning, not the end.

Example of a Fixed Mindset High school parents won’t participate in Parental Involvement activities. Example only, this will work with any topic that needs to be addressed.

Moving to a Growth Mindset Reflect on the idea that High school parents don’t participate in Parental Involvement activities. Can we change the way we think about this? What is the root cause of the idea that High school parents don’t participate in Parental Involvement activities? Lack of parental involvement is a restraining force toward student achievement. That means that it is moving you away from your goal of increased student achievement.

Lack of Parental Involvement in High School Fixed Mindset Thoughts Growth Mindset Thoughts Parents naturally “disconnect” in high school no matter what we do, that won’t change. Parents naturally disconnect in high school; however, teachers can develop relationships with parents to build the connection to involve parents in the educational process. This is only an idea used for this demonstration, not the only possibility to a Fixed Mindset thought. This will vary by school, school level, team etc.

Group Activity: Consider the Restraining Force. 2. Think about it from the standpoint of a “fixed” mindset. 3. Recreate the “Mindset Chart” on the next slide to move from “Fixed Mindset” to “Growth Mindset”. Share with the group how the Restraining Force could be lessened or alleviated by a change in mindset. Chart is also posted on website.

SHARING Your Restraining Force (Problem) How does it look from the standpoint of a “fixed” mindset. 2 Drawbacks due to this mindset 3. How does it look from the standpoint of a “growth” mindset. 2 Benefits from this mindset 1 “Ah-Ha” moment Discuss with your team and then share with the group

Reflections on Activity Discuss with your team: What resonated for you? Which strategies did you find helpful? Which might you implement or adjust for your context? Is Further PD necessary? If so what topic? Be prepared to share your thoughts with the whole group.
