Abraham Originally named Abram, Abraham is called our father in Faith, and founder of the Hebrew people He is one of the Patriarchs of the Church He was called by God to go to the land of Canaan and when he was 99, God made a covenant with Abraham—making him the father of many nations Abraham and his wife Sarah had their son Isaac at an advanced (old) age Abraham’s faith was tested when God told him to go up the mountain to sacrifice his son

Absolution The words said by the Priest in the Sacrament of Penance (Reconciliation). We are pardoned of our sins.

Adam and Eve Our first parents, Adam and Eve committed original sin. Since Adam and Eve lost sanctifying grace, it could not be “passed on” to their offspring (one cannot give what they do not have-the rich man who gambles away his money can not give it to his heirs-in the same way, Adam and Eve could not “pass on” grace as they lost it through Original Sin). Baptism removes Original Sin, gives us sanctifying grace, makes us children of God and members of the Church (there is much more to this Sacrament!)

Adoration Worship due only to God-in which we praise and honor Him

Advent The penitential season leading to Christmas. It is a four week period of preparation for the birth of our Savior

Alleluia Hebrew for “all praise to the God who is” It is usually said right before the proclamation of the Gospel at Mass Alleluia is not said during the season of Lent

Angel Pure spirit, the angels were created before man They are God’s special messengers (angel means messenger) The angels were created by God to praise Him and to help God’s people (us!)

Anointing of the Sick One of the seven sacraments, anointing of the sick is given to one who is gravely ill or in danger of dying It gives spiritual and bodily strength to the one anointed Priests are the ordinary ministers of the Anointing of the Sick (bishops can also anoint but Deacons cannot)

Apostles Creed A brief statement of the beliefs of the Faith It is attributed to the 12 Apostles

Apostles Creed Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Ark of the Covenant The golden chest containing the Ten Commandments which the Hebrews carried in the desert during their journey to the Promised Land

Assumption of Mary When Mary was taken body and soul to heaven. Mary did not have to suffer the separation of body and soul as she was without sin-both personal or original sin The Dogma of Mary’s assumption was defined by Pope Pius XII November 1, 1950 We celebrate the Feast of Mary’s Assumption on August 15th It is a holy day of obligation. Meaning all Catholics are obliged to go to Mass on that day

Contrition To be sorry for one’s sins There are two forms of contrition Perfect-to be sorry out of love for God Imperfect-to be sorry out of fear of hell

Corporal Works of Mercy Works of mercy that tend to the physical or bodily needs of others: Feed the hungry Give drink to the thirsty Clothe the naked Visit the imprisoned shelter the homeless Visit the sick Bury the dead

Spiritual Works of Mercy Works of Mercy that tend to the spiritual needs of others: Admonish the sinner Instruct the Ignorant Counsel the doubtful Comfort the sorrowful Bear wrongs patiently Forgive all injuries Pray for the living and the dead

Lectio Divina Divine reading It is a way of reading Scripture or other spiritual writing that can include these steps Reading the passage Meditating/reflecting on what is read Responding to the words in one’s heart Resting in the presence of God Ignatian spirituality encourages us to read passages twice-once for the head, once for the heart

Mercy To have compassion and extend forgiveness to another

Obedience To hear is to obey For the faithful, that means to hear God’s commands (laws), and follow them

Penance Something one does to make up for sins Another name for the Sacrament of Reconciliation in which we confess our sins to a priest and ask God’s pardon

Penitent A person who is sorry for their sins and seeks forgiveness in the Sacrament of Reconciliation To repent of one’s sins

Reconciliation To restore friendship between persons When we receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation/Penance we restore our relationship with God if we have committed a mortal sin, or deepen our relationship if we have committed only venial sins since our last Confession

Stations of the Cross A devotion in honor of the Passion of Our Lord consisting of 14 Stations We are encouraged to meditate on each Station

The Stations 1. Jesus is condemned to death. 2. Jesus accepts his cross. 3. Jesus falls the first time. 4. Jesus meets his mother. 5. Simon helps Jesus carry the cross. 6.
