An Introduction It is the proven fact that literacy is the key to the socio-economic development of the country. The Government of India, aims to achieve the 85% literacy by the end of the XIth five year plan (2007-2012) in the country across all states of India. This Atlas, provides the landscape view of the literacy situation in the second largest state (geographically) Madhya Pradesh divided into 50 districts and located in the heart of the country. The Atlas has been prepared by using the data from the latest Census of India (preliminary report) 2011 . The Atlas contains many maps, enlightening strategic information by unfolding the achievements, gaps and the districts requiring attention with priority for interventions so that the low performing areas can keep pace with other areas of the state for development. The maps are self-explanatory and easily interpretable and can be used by the policy makers, administrators, programme implementers, UN agencies and other interested organizations and individuals working in the field of social development in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India.

Specific Objectives: Strategic and/or Actionable Information To provide strategic and/or actionable information from Census 2011 in ready-to-use form to the development Professionals / Administrators for evidence-based planning and decision-making by GIS-based analysis of the literacy-data generated by Census of India (Preliminary Report) 2011 through: Reviewing the progress by the state in each of the district made during the decade 2001-2011. Identifying the districts with extreme (high & marginal) performance. Highlighting the districts requiring attention with high priority for development of literacy. Identifying the cluster/(s) of districts (if any) with geographical contiguity of most illiterate population in the state. Supporting development partners in usage of literacy data for stimulating growth in the state.
