Español-I Full year program. Same as Spanish-I at Downers Grove North. Each of our classes is shorter in length than DGN. Thus, we move at a faster pace, so that we can cover the same amount of content. We have a test or a quiz each week, on average. Focus: Correct pronunciation, comprehension, and usage of key vocabulary and grammar. Proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and communicating at the beginner’s - level of Spanish. ¡Así se dice!: Student print materials: Textbook & Workbook Student on-line / electronic resources: Textbook, Learn Smart, !Cerego!

Grading Quarter Grades: Grades are weighted: Tests & Major Projects 60%; Quizzes & Small Projects 35%; Participation & In-class Work 5%. Homework is checked-in for completion, but is not averaged as part of the grade. Though it will impact the participation level. I / We check homework daily and note it in PowerSchool, with a check-mark if completed and is entered as a 0 if it is not completed. Students must have all homework turned in, in order to be eligible for extra- credit-opportunities, test-retakes, test / quiz booster-activities, etc.

Advancing to Level 2 Advancing to Level 2 & DGN Course Credit: Based on teacher recommendation, and a grade of C or better. DGN requests recommendations in January / February each year. Herrick Foreign Language teachers make necessary changes to recommendations in the Spring, based on student progress. DGN guides us to recommend students for Level-II who consistently maintain a C (or better) overall grade. To get DGN credit for Spanish-1, students must: a.) Pass Spanish-I (with a C or better). b.) Enroll in Spanish-2 at DGN and complete the first semester of Spanish-2 (with a C or better). c.) Earn a C (or better) on the midterm exam in Spanish-2 at DGN.

Outside of Class Work Daily homework (Approximately 30 min. to practice the lesson of the day) Generally, checked for a completion grade. Late work accepted anytime, unless otherwise stated. Daily self-review (15 – 30 min. review of vocabulary and previously learned content to be covered on upcoming tests) Review notes, handouts, and text explanations. Review checked homework assignments Use checked homework to self – assess progress and know what to get help with. Perform practice exercises from the book. Do some of the “drill and practice” activities linked on my classroom website. Go over vocabulary / grammar flashcards that the students have created. Drill & Practice with a friend. Teach the vocabulary and grammar to someone at home. Come in for help and review. Utilize strategies that fit your learning style.

Important Factoids Language Proficiency: 80% of learning a foreign language is memorization (and repetition). It takes 70 exposures to internalize a new vocabulary word in a second language. It takes over 700 hours of language use to become proficient in a language.
