Five-Minute Check (over Lesson 12–1) Main Idea Example 1: Problem-Solving Skill Lesson Menu
I will solve problems by determining reasonable answers. Main Idea/Vocabulary
Juanita is trimming the hedges Juanita is trimming the hedges. They are 37 meters from the electrical outlet. Her extension cord is 3,500 centimeters long. Juanita estimates that the extension cord is long enough to reach the hedges. Is she correct? If not, how much longer does an extension cord need to be to reach the hedges? Example 1
Understand What facts do you know? The distance from the hedges to the electrical outlet. The length of the extension cord in centimeters. What do you need to find? Does Juanita have a long enough extension cord? Example 1
Plan Convert 3,500 centimeters to meters. Then compare. Example 1
Solve First, convert 3,500 centimeters to meters. 3,500 centimeters = meters 3,500 ÷ 100 = 35 So, 3,500 centimeters = 35 meters. Since 35 < 37 meters, Juanita’s extension cord will not be long enough to reach the hedges. Example 1
Solve To find how much longer the extension cord needs to be, subtract. 37 – 35 = 2 Answer: So, Juanita will need an extension cord that is 2 meters or 200 centimeters longer to reach the hedges. Example 1
Check Look back at the problem. Since 3,700 > 3,500 and 3,700 – 3,500 = 200, the answer is reasonable. Example 1
