Intersection Crash Analysis in the State of Oregon Barak McClennen and Guillaume Hart CE 202 Spring 2016 8 June 2016 Intent: Find the intersection in Oregon with the highest crash rate

Introduction Driving can be risky. Things that can go wrong: Get distracted Mechanical failures Other drivers Crashes can occur anywhere Goal was to find the intersections with the most accidents

Background In 2013 Nationally: There were 32,719 fatalities due to traffic crashes There were 2,313,000 injuries due to traffic crashes The fatality rate was 1.10 per 100 million vehicle miles traveled (VMT) The injury rate was 78 per 100 million (VMT) Both were a decrease from that of 2012

Background Oregon in 2013: There 2466 crashes involving alcohol and 530 involving other drugs There were 313 driving fatalities and 1,418 injuries 105 fatalities were Alcohol-Impaired Total fatalities were down from that of 2012 at 337 Total crashes involving pedestrians were 885 Total crashes involving pedestrian cyclists were 969

Procedures

Results The two intersections with the most crashes for 2013 were SE 122nd Ave. and SE Division St., and SE 82nd Ave. and SE Powell Blvd. SE 82nd Ave. and SE Powell Blvd. had 36, with reckless driving as the main cause, making up 22 of the crashes.

Results The intersection at SE 122nd Ave. and SE Division St. had the most at 42, with following too closely making up 22 of them.

Improvements Reduce bus stops at the intersections Extend left turn lanes Add right turn lanes Change timing of the signals to increase flow
