It’s AP Style quiz time (again)!

What numbers should you spell out?

Numbers under 10 One, two, three… 10, 11, 12

Do you capitalize freshman/sophomore/junior/senior?

No, unless it’s the first word in a sentence. Alex Lam, a junior, said leprechauns live in the meadow in front of school.

How would you talk about Oct. 27?

Oct. 27 It’s more than a week away. “The board will meet Oct. 27 to discuss the issue.”

How would you talk about Oct. 16?

Thursday It’s less than a week away. “The board will meet Thursday.”

How would you talk about Oct. 9?

Last Thursday It’s less than a week before. “The board met Thursday to discuss the issue.”

How would you talk about Oct. 13?

Today It’s today.

How would you talk about Oct. 14?

Tuesday Yes, we say “today.” However, we don’t say “tomorrow” or “yesterday.”

What’s next month (written in AP Style)?

What day is Thanksgiving (written in AP Style)?

Nov. 27 Write out the full month when it’s alone, but abbreviate with a date (except the usuals like May, June, etc)

Kortnie Cruz We don’t use courtesy titles, so Mrs. or Ms. or Miss doesn’t matter. If you quote someone, always stick with Ms.

David Cash You only call someone “Dr.” if they are a medical doctor.

What if you want to use his title (superintendent) What if you want to use his title (superintendent)? Then how do you write his name?

Trick question! It depends on where you put the title.

… said Superintendent David Cash. In the front, it’s capitalized.

… said David Cash, superintendent of Santa Barbara Unified School District. In the back, it’s not.

What’s a good rule of thumb for where to put the title?

If it’s a short title, put it in the front If it’s a short title, put it in the front. If it’s more than three words, put it in the back.

… said Principal Shawn Carey.

… said Bill Woodard, assistant principal for curriculum, instruction and assessment.

Notice that these are official titles. You wouldn’t write: … said Teacher Barnaby Dillon.

That would be: … said science teacher Barnaby Dillon That would be: … said science teacher Barnaby Dillon. Or …said Barnaby Dillon, science teacher.

Write the following in correct AP Style:

$1.5 million This is the case for all millions, billions, etc.

$4 OK, now let’s get advanced!

6 cents Yes, there are lots of funky exceptions to rules when it comes to numbers (also addresses and states)

What time does first period start on Monday morning (in AP Style)?

8 a.m. 9:34 p.m., midnight, noon

Write your age when you lost your first tooth (in AP Style). If you can’t remember, guess!

6 Ages are always digits.
