Presentation transcript:

Legacy Lifecycle Data Management Problem: By far the majority of defense parts procured today are legacy, parts designed prior to the advent of modern 3D CAD design tools. Tech “data” for these parts consists of raster images of the original paper drawing. Need better extraction and tabulation of requirements. Requirements extraction and tabulation is currently a manual process subject to human error. Requirements not associated with processes that make and validate them. Requirements not readily available to all production planning processes. Costs OEMs and their suppliers tens of millions of dollars in corrective actions. Technology Application: Optical Character Recognition (OCR) based interactive extraction of requirements. Tabulation of results in a web based, supplier accessible system for managing First Article process qualification. Improve OEM/supplier management of requirements to Six Sigma level. Collaborate with F101 engine ECSS PLM Pathfinder. Prepare for ECSS deployment. DoD Partners: US Air Force: Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center DLA (DSCR) Industry Partners: Rolls Royce GE Aviation BCT Technology Net-Inspect Renaissance Services Readiness Benefits: Cycle Time: Reduces supplier qualification time and component scrap and rework, improving throughput by as much as 5% Reliability: Conversion of manual requirements management processes to computer aided ones reduces opportunity for human error Availability: Increased component throughput results in propulsion mission capability improvement Cost: Supplier qualification labor savings of an estimated 20 hours/part will result in cost avoidance of about $29M/year
