Chapter 12: Stress, Coping & Health

Basics Biopsychosocial Model – all tied together – mental health does not exist alone – how is environment ? How is physical health ? Historically – contagious dz – less important today Chronic dz – issue for today – heart (CAD), DM Health psychology – advise, ed, counsel

Stress Cumulative Types 1. frustration 2. conflict 3. change 4. pressure Frustration – not getting what you want Conflict – classic area of study > Lewin, Miller -clash between 2 or more incompatible desires, beh

Stress Conflict 3 varieties Approach-approach > want both, need choose Avoidance-avoidance > must choose, do not want either Approach-avoidance > want something, but it has negative consequences

Stress Change – issue is readjustment Pressure – disturbance because of expectations, demands – most comes from individuals themselves Any of these stress types can be self-generated Where are the answers, then ??

Stress & Bodily Reactions Selye – 1930s – found that body reacts to various kinds of stress in non-specific ways – all stressors act on us in the same way > heart & BP incr > feeling nervous General adaptation syndrome (GAS) – alarm > resistance > exhaustion GAS ~ flight-or-fight

Stress & Bodily Reactions Brain 1. hypothalamus activates sympathetic NS (ANS) > tells adrenal glands to send catecholamines (hormone) to get ready for flight/fight 2. hypothalamus > pituitary gland > pit produces ACTH > tells adrenals to produce corticosteroids (anti-inflammatory)

Stress & Bodily Reactions Stress, depression – inhibit neurogenesis Stress – anx and/or depression > inflammation > CAD, RA, DM, cancer Immune system

Stress: What Helps 1. social support 2. optimism – naturally positive Stress > helps us grow, be resilient
