Settlement of North America First Nations - Part I: Settlement of North America

First Migration to North America The BERING STRAIT hypothesis the most widely accepted theory of how North America was first settled First occupants initially migrated to Alaska 32 000 years ago Sunken sea levels caused immense plains to emerge These plains would have linked Asia to Alaska – Bering Strait (Beringia) Hunters followed animals from Asia to the Americas via Bering Strait

B) Subsequent Migrations For thousands of years nomadic population occupied Alaska 15 000 Years Ago Approximately 15,000 years ago, the retreat of ice allowed the first Aboriginal people to settled in Central North America/Canada 12 000 Years Ago Native peoples settled in present day Quebec 1000 Years Ago Ancestors of the Inuit, Thule people arrived in the Arctic from present day Alaska, much later on – by the year 1000.
