Choice Reading: The Why For scholars to develop a love of reading. Reading is a good and pleasurable activity. When given encouragement and the opportunity to read a book of their own choosing, scholars will love to read. For scholars to develop as readers. The act of reading makes one a better reader. For scholars to be able to access high-leveled texts. As scholars become better readers, they will read more challenging books.

Choice Reading: The What Daily, uninterrupted time for scholars to read a book of their own choosing that is at or around their independent reading level. The goal is 20 minutes of sustained reading. However, it may take time to get started, and attention may lapse at times. Therefore, we set aside 30 minutes per day to ensure that 20 minutes of reading takes place.

Choice Reading: The How The environment must be fun, enjoyable, and built around a love of reading. Make it personal. Teachers are encouraged to talk about their experiences. What are you reading? What are your favorite books and genres? Where do you read? How you had any good conversations about books lately? What about in the past? Why is reading important to you? Make it social. Allow scholars to share what they are reading and why they like it. Dedicate time for recommendations. The environment must be conducive for reading, which means free from distractions. Do not make announcements during this time. Do not pass out homework, graded work, or other assignments. Scholars must understand what they read. Scholars should complete three reflection logs per week. (This can be done at home.) Teachers should hold regular book check-ins, especially with struggling readers.

Choice Reading: Reflection Logs What is the theme/central idea? What conflict are the characters facing? How has the protagonist changed? What details are creating the mood? What is the historical context? How is it reflected in the story? What connections are there between this book and others you have read? What is the genre? How do you know? From what perspective is this book written? And how does it affect the story?

Reading Intervention Mission: To prepare all scholars to access grade-level texts. Approach: Scholars participate a series of 12-week novel-based modules, in small groups, with leveled texts. The novel is read aloud together in class. Every few pages, scholars respond in writing to 2-3 questions. Then they turn and talk with their shoulder partner. Finally, the class discusses briefly. And then the process repeats. At the end of each day is a 2-3 question multiple choice exit ticket. Once or twice per week, an important section of text is selected for a close read, with an extended written response.
