NWS Operational Advisory Team NOAT NWS Operational Advisory Team What is the NOAT? A group comprised of the SSD Chiefs from the six (6) NWS Regions plus a representative for NCEP NOAT Membership Greg Patrick (Southern Region) Jeff Craven (Central Region) Ken Johnson (Eastern Region) – Deputy Chair Andy Edman (Western Region) Eugene Petrescue (Alaska Region) Bill Ward (Pacific Region) – Chair Jim Yoe (NCEP)

NOAT Purpose What is the purpose of the NOAT? Develop guidance for the NESDIS Science and Demonstration Executive Board (SDEB) to ensure GOES-R and JPSS science development and demonstration activities are more likely to be aligned with NWS operational priorities The NOAT does not fund the future projects nor do we determine what is funded. We are an advisory group to the SDEB.

WRN - Science and Technology Concepts NOAT WRN - Science and Technology Concepts The NOAT Science Vision (Key Themes) come from the Science and Technology (S&T) CAPSTONE document Themes are tied to Underlying S&T Concepts in WRN Roadmap: Best State of the Atmosphere (e.g., comprehensive situational knowledge, 3-D analysis) Next-Generation Forecast System Convective initiation/Warn on Forecast Decision Support Information Systems Integration of Social Science into the forecast process Risk Reduction as a Core Validation Activity

The NOAT considers: What is the proposed project path to operations (R2O…Capital O)? Current and future NWS operations AWIPS II and/or evolving prototypes of future systems Test bed, Proving Ground, operational (NWS) personnel Integration into current/evolving operational modeling and data assimilation systems Is a project satellite-centric? Okay if it makes sense Fusion Multisensor (more than just other sat sensors) NOAA/NWS Integrated observation system and operational NWP Don’t forget potential end-user/stakeholder info (e.g., aviation routes, traffic)

Additional Activities NOAT Additional Activities Training: NOAT is heavily engaged with the Satellite Proving Grounds, and the OCLO to develop the next generation of satellite training OCONUS NOAT members (especially PR) are developing H8 training that will inform/influence NWS satellite training Option 2 – Future Operational Capabilities: NOAT is working with NESDIS and Cooperative Institutes on getting candidate products/capabilities funded and evaluated GOES-R Scan Mode Alternatives: New capabilities with GOES-R allow for multiple modes of operations. NOAT is working with NESDIS to develop an implementation strategy GOES-R Rapid Scan Strategy: GOES-R is capable of scanning 1 meso-area every 30 seconds or 2 different areas (alternating) every minute. NOAT is working with NESDIS to develop implementation strategy
