MATH Essential Questions What kind of experiences help develop number sense? MATH Essential Questions

MATH Essential Questions How do digit values change as they are moved around in large numbers? MATH Essential Questions

MATH Essential Questions What determines the value of a digit? MATH Essential Questions

Warm Up Complete the patterns: 7, 14, ___, 28, ___, ___, 49 2, 4, 8, 16, ___, ___ 18, 24, ___, 36, ___, 48, ___

Think and Write Tell about some situations in your life where you would need to know how to compare numbers.

< means less than > means greater than Comparing Numbers < means less than > means greater than = means equal to * You can always think of the greater than/less than symbols as alligators. Alligators are hungry, and will always eat the bigger number so their mouth is open towards it. The equal sign is an alligator facing forward because he does not know which one to eat.

Comparing Numbers Practice! Which number would the hungry alligator rather eat? 689 _____ 698 3,212 ____ 3,122 71,896 ____ 71,986

Comparing Numbers with Place Value Blocks Sometimes you will be asked to compare numbers using place value blocks. What do these blocks represent?

Comparing Numbers with Place Value Blocks Compare numbers. Which is larger? ____

Problem 1 Marisol has $3,478 in her bank account. Luisa has $3,487 in her bank account. Which girl has the greater bank account?

Problem 2 Brad drove 4,624 miles on his road trip. Russ drove 4,642 miles on his road trip. Who drove fewer miles, Brad or Russ?

Problem 3 Last year, Jonah ran 1,732 miles. This year, he ran 1,723 miles. Which year did he run more miles?

Challenge Time Write a problem in your Interactive Math Notebook like the ones you solved today. Give it to your partner. Are they able to solve the problem?

Game – Ticket Master Today, you will be playing two games using tickets that look similar to movie tickets. You will be given a Ticket Master Worksheet which includes the instructions. Have fun!

Wrap Up In this lesson you learned how to compare and order numbers using place value. Homework is: 3-3 Practice if you think you understand the lesson or 3-3 Reteaching if you are not sure.
