A Testing of Discipleship Mark 10:1-12

Two parts of Mark 10:1-12 The Pharisee’s question and purpose. Jesus’ question and answer.

The Pharisee’s question (1) The Pharisee’s question and purpose Mark 10:1,2

Mark 10:1,2 And rising up, He went from there to the region of Judea, and beyond the Jordan; and crowds gathered around Him again, and, according to His custom, He once more {began} to teach them. 2 And {some} Pharisees came up to Him, testing Him, and {began} to question Him whether it was lawful for a man to divorce a wife.

Deut. 24:1 “When a man takes a wife and marries her, and it happens that she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce and puts {it} in her hand and sends her out from his house,

Deut. 24:2,3 and she leaves his house and goes and becomes another man’s {wife,} 3 and if the latter husband turns against her and writes her a certificate of divorce and puts {it} in her hand and sends her out of his house, or if the latter husband dies who took her to be his wife,

Deut. 24:4 {then} her former husband who sent her away is not allowed to take her again to be his wife, since she has been defiled; for that is an abomination before the LORD, and you shall not bring sin on the land which the LORD your God gives you as an inheritance.

Matt. 19:3 And {some} Pharisees came to Him, testing Him, and saying, “Is it lawful {for a man} to divorce his wife for any cause at all?”

"He that desires to be divorced from his wife for any cause whatsoever—and many such causes happen among men—let him in writing give assurance that he will never use her again as his wife any more, for by these means she may be at liberty to marry another husband although before this bill of divorce be given she is not to be permitted to do so.“ -Josephus

Mark 10:2 And {some} Pharisees came up to Him, testing Him, and {began} to question Him whether it was lawful for a man to divorce a wife.

Mark 10:3-5 And He answered and said to them, “What did Moses command you?” 4 And they said, “Moses permitted {a man} TO WRITE A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE AND SEND {her} AWAY.” 5 But Jesus said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment.

Mark 10:6-8 “But from the beginning of creation, {God} MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE. 7 “FOR THIS CAUSE A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER, 8 AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH; consequently they are no longer two, but one flesh.

Mark 10:9-11 “What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.” 10 And in the house the disciples {began} questioning Him about this again. 11 And He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her;

Mark 10:12 and if she herself divorces her husband and marries another man, she is committing adultery.”

Mark 10:5 But Jesus said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment.

Mark 10:7 “FOR THIS CAUSE A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER,

Gen. 2:22,23 And the LORD God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man.23 And the man said, This is now bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.”

Gen. 2:24 For this cause a man shall leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.

Matt. 19:9 “And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”

Matt. 5:31,32 “And it was said, ‘WHOEVER SENDS HIS WIFE AWAY, LET HIM GIVE HER A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE’; 32 but I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for {the} cause of unchastity, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Matt. 19:10,11 The disciples said to Him, “If the relationship of the man with his wife is like this, it is better not to marry.” 11 But He said to them, “Not all men {can} accept this statement, but {only} those to whom it has been given.

Matt. 19:12 “For there are eunuchs who were born that way from their mother’s womb; and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men; and there are {also} eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to accept {this,} let him accept {it.”}

Matt. 19:11 But He said to them, “Not all men {can} accept this statement, but {only} those to whom it has been given.

As disciples are we ready to face the tough questions in regards to others and ourselves? This is the real test of discipleship.
