Writer's craft in Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” 📠📖 Presentation by: Meli Ruiz, Jefferson Rodriguez, Luhana Retuerto, and Yazmin De Jesus

Repetition Repetition is a literary device that simply repeats the same words or phrases to make an idea or theme clear in a story, poem, or novel. Repetition effectively creates a very fast tempo for the story's climax. Repetition is used often in “The Most Dangerous Game”. The main character, Rainsford, often questions the "game" that Zaroff hunts. Rainsford’s curiosity creates curiosity in the reader as well. It is obvious that the word “game” has a lot to do with the title of the story. “Game” has more than one meaning. Not only does Rainsford and Zaroff play the cat and mouse game in the wild, but Rainsford also becomes the “game” that Zaroff hunts. In the wild the reader finds Rainsford repeating to himself that he cannot “lose his nerve,” which is what keeps him sane and helps him to ultimately win the game in the end.

Flashback Flashbacks are interruptions that writers create to insert the characters’ past events to provide background or context. By using flashbacks the writers allow their readers to gain insight on what is motivating the character. A flashback also shows the reader why a character is the way he/she is. Flashback is used in the story when General Zaroff speaks about his childhood, in particular, when he was five years old. It is stated that when he was five years old, he was given a little gun, especially made for him so that he could shoot sparrows with. Zaroff speaks about what he used to hunt and how his father praised him about his marksmanship. This is important to the story because it shows where his thirst for blood came from and why he likes to hunt so much.

Surprise Ending It is a common practice in narration used to keep the interest of an audience, usually surprising them with a revelation. Some "twists" are foreshadowed. When a plot twist happens near the end of a story, especially if it changes one's view of the preceding events, it is known as a surprise ending. What is surprising about this story’s ending is how character roles are reversed. Zaroff becomes the prey and Rainsford, the hunter. The fact that Rainsford continues the game while in Zaroff’s bedroom is a bit twisted as well. Basically, Rainsford hides behind a curtain and waits for his prey, which is a bit creepy. Also, at the end, the reader is simply left with Rainsford’s never having slept in a more comfy bed. This leads the reader to believe that Zaroff lost the game and was fed to his dogs. This ending also leaves the reader wondering what will happen next. What do you think will happen next?
