Peste des Petits Ruminant in KSA Ministry of Agriculture Kingdom of Saudi Arabia 2

PPR in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia ِAnimal Resources in the Kingdom Sheep and goats are two main sources of meat production in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with estimated populations of about 14500.000 and 4500000heads, respectively Both of them constitute about 90% of the animal population in the kingdom. PPR in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

PPR in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia PPR in KSA ِHistorical background In Saudi Arabia, PPR was suspected clinically in sheep in the 1980s However, no virus was isolated until 1990 when the virus was successfully isolated during an outbreak in indigenous goats. PPR in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

PPR in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Current Situation of the Disease The disease is endemic in many regions in the kingdom with continuing out breaks specially during the cold season. Since January 2015 about 357 foci of the disease have been Reported with 33169 suspected animal PPR in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Epidemiology Clinical surveillance (individual)based on outbreak investigations revealed a prevalence of about 2% On herd level (within a herd), morbidity based on gross pathology is close to 20%

PPR in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Control of the Disease in the Kingdom Diagnosis of the Disease Clinical Signs Specimens for Virus Nucleic Acid (PCR) or Antigens detection(Immunocapture ELISA). Serum samples (Competitive ELISA). Diagnosis Obstacles No DIVA Test ( Live attenuated vaccine is in use in the kingdom) PPR in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Epidemiological Situation The disease may be under reported ( reluctance of the farmers to notify MOA. Continuing Outbreaks in all over the country. Difficulties in the restriction of animal movements from the infected region. Presence of the disease in the neighboring countries with less than sufficient coordination. Difficulties in in borders control. The kingdom imports millions of heads mainly from east of Africa specially during Hajj season.

Current Control Plan Disease control plan depends on mass vaccination of sheep and goats routinely with live attenuated vaccine produced by MOA laboratories. since January 2015, 8,836,895 head have been vaccinated. Obstacles The majority of sheep and goats are raised under the traditional production system in remote areas. No identification system is adopted Unwillingness of many owners to vaccinate their herds. The vaccine is thermo-labile

Thanks
