Fire Fighting Pumps
Portable pump
Vehicle mounted pumps
Centrifugal pump Two parts Impeller Volute
operating principle Water inlet vanes Water discharge at periphery
Single stage / Multi Stage Gland packing – graphite, cotton or asbestos flax
Characteristics of centrifugal pump No flow – pressure is maximum Delivery valves opened - pressure decreases Pumps speed increases – pressure to increases Drive – IC engine Pump performance – suction lift
Pump performance Duty point – maximum quantity of water as specific pressure. 7 Kg/cm2 at 3 mt depth
Priming devices Reciprocating primer Exhaust ejector Rotary (sliding vanes) Rotary (water ring)
Reciprocating Primer It is small force pump which is driven the main pump drive shaft. Usually arranged in pairs or single position double acting pumps. RPM 1000 to 1500. Advantages: Simple to operate Highly efficient Positive in action Operates at low engine speed. Dis-advantages: Bulky No. of working parts liable to wear and tear.
Exhaust Ejector Primer It utilizes exhaust gas from engine which are diverted through directed across the apparatus of a tube connected to the impeller chamber. requires full engine speed Advantages: Simple in operation Less subject to damage and mis-handling Dis-advantages: Less efficient than reciprocating primers Acting back pressure on engine
