School-wide Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (SWPBIS) Readiness Activity miblsi.org

Welcome This readiness session consists of four activities. Each activity will be identified with a and will be accompanied by directions. Let’s get started!

Addressing School Climate The White House acknowledges the importance of this work. “Create a safer climate at schools across the country.”

Introduction to School Climate 1 First, take 1 minute to write down your definition of school climate. Then, read through the document titled “What is School Climate and Why is it Important?”

2 minute partner discussion How did your definition of school climate align or differ from the one provided by the National School Climate Center?

Creating the Conditions for Learning Flow chart with the three areas that comprise School Climate: Engagment, Safety and Environment. Under engagement is relationships, respect for diversity and school participation. Safety includes emotional safety, physical safety, and substance use. The environment includes the four areas of: physical environment, academic environment, wellness, and disciplinary environent. All of these elements contribute to the school climate within a building.

What would a positive, encouraging school climate look like? Students know what is expected of them and choose to do so because they: Know what to do Have the skills to do it See the natural benefits for acting responsibly Adults and students have more time to: Focus on relationships Focus on classroom instruction There is an instructional approach to discipline Instances of problem behavior are opportunities to learn and practice pro-social behavior

Video: “Best Evidence Based Practices for Behavioral Support” 2 Video: “Best Evidence Based Practices for Behavioral Support” As an overview of the best practices for supporting behavior, Dr. George Sugai will talk about School-wide Positive Behavioral Supports (SWPBIS) Before watching the video, please read the statements on the following slide with a partner and determine whether you believe the statements are true or false

True or False Statement School-wide PBIS is a packaged program for addressing behavior in schools. When schools do a good job of building the basic structures of SWPBIS, they capture 80 – 90% of students under the umbrella of positive school climate. Universal screening, continuous progress monitoring, and monitoring the fidelity of implementation are three of the practices that make up the SWPBIS framework. SWPBIS can be put into place through a traditional one-time in-service. District-level teams will help to support sustainable and durable implementation of SWPBIS With a partner, read each statement on the screen and determine if you believe the statement is true (T) or false (F) and why.

Dr. George Sugai unpacks Best Practices YouTube Video Best Evidence Based Practices for Behavioral Supports (https://youtu.be/I5_ttGPa4nk)
