Why do Law? Relevance – From shopping to buying your first property, Law is a subject that you will see in every aspect of your daily life. Intrinsic interest of topics – as the law is so entwined with our experiences, the topics are inevitably interesting. Some of the topics are even more interesting though, because they are outside of our experiences.

Transferable skills of analysis and evaluation – studying Law A-Level isn’t just about memorising cases and facts. It is about applying the details to the points of law, using them to understand why decisions have been made and why some of those decisions have successfully been appealed. The ability to analyse, evaluate and use facts to construct an argument are skills employers value highly, and apply to a huge range of careers, not just within law.

What do universities think about A-Level Law ? We welcome applications from students studying A-level law for all our undergraduate programmes – University of Exeter. The University of Nottingham accepts A-level law as an A-level subject choice. The University welcomes a wide range of entry qualifications including A-level law for any of its courses. Some courses require specific A-level subjects (or their equivalent). – University of Portsmouth.

What do we study? Law making – how does an idea become law? Who makes the law? How is it reformed? The legal system – how does the court system work in England and Wales? Who works in the courts? Tort of Negligence - what is Tort? How can you decide if someone is negligent? What are the defences? How do you compensate someone?

What do we study? Criminal Law – person and property – what is the actus reus? What is the mens rea? What are non-fatal offences? What are the defences against fatal offences? The nature of law– Morality, Justice, society- how is the law different to morals? What is justice? What is the role of law in society? How does law reflect changes in technology?
