Do Now: Speaker/POV Review with the class. Have students highlight the evidence of pov/personal pronouns

Objective: SWBAT evaluate 3 poems, with an emphasis on speaker/pov by discussing and writing about the significance of pov, at 70-100% mastery through the end of the block period. Agenda Do Now: Pop Quiz- Think/Pair/Share Grades POV: “Monologue for an Onion” Venn: “Hawk Roosting” & Golden Retrievals” Written Response RL.8.1, 8.2, 8.5, 8.6 & 8.10 Pass out grades

Manipulating the POV Sample Discussion: TIIPSFFASSTT

Task 1. Select 2 stanzas from “MFO” that explicitly uses 1st person POV. 2. Rewrite both stanzas from 1st person POV to 3rd person POV as if you are the individual peeling the onion. *Change language to fit the speaker 3.Change the 2nd person to 1st.

Compare/ Contrast how these two creatures view the world. Have students circle the 1st person pov in each poem. Highlight evidence of how each animal views the world. Complete Venn diagram. Students should record 3-4 items in each section of the venn diagram. Review responses with entire class for all to add to their perspective list.

Manipulating the POV: 1st to 3rd Change all of the first person in both poems to 3rd person, directly on the poem. Class read of the change. Discuss observations

Discuss the original POV in each of the poems and the impact the POVs have on the works. Consider how the change in POV alters the diction/language choices of each poem. Discuss overall impressions.
