The Executive Branch

How do you get in the White House To be President you must have the following requirements: At least 35 years old Someone born in the United States Living in the US for at least 14 years The above is also true for the Vice President.

How the President is Chosen Did you know that voters in the United States don't vote for the president? People actually vote for a group of electors when they go to the polls on Election Day. These electors vote for the President and belong to a group called the Electoral College. In order to win the presidency, you need at least 270 electoral votes.

Terms of Office Once elected to President the term is for 4 years. The President unlike Senators and Representatives has a term limit, meaning that they can only serve for a certain amount of years. The President can only serve 2 terms or a total of 8 years (not entirely true).

What is the Job of the Executive Branch? The President can be found in article II of the Constitution. The Executive Branch’s main job is to enforce the laws. The President cannot do this job alone so he appoints 1000s of people in various departments to make sure laws are being followed including FBI, Department of Treasury, and the IRS. The Executive Branch is responsible for spending the government’s money the way Congress says it should be spent.

Commander in Chief Another responsibility for the President is the Commander-in-Chief. The Commander-in-Chief means the president is in control of the entire armed forces (army, navy, air force, etc.). When Congress declares war, the president is in charge of forces. The president is also in charge of the nuclear codes in case he needs to use them against another nation. They are kept in a leather briefcase and guarded at all times. It’s called “THE FOOTBALL.”

Chief Diplomat What is diplomacy? The President can: Conducting relations with other nations The President can: Appoints Ambassadors (Representatives of the United States to other nations) Sign treaties (Agreements with other nations) Hold formal meetings with officials from other countries

Other Responsibilities Chief of State the President is the unofficial spokesperson for the country Judicial Leader mostly check the Judicial branch of government. The President nominates Federal and Supreme Court Judges. The President can also: Give Pardons= forgiveness of crimes Give Reprieves= a delay on a punishment

What if something happens to the president? This is the order of succession after the president: Vice President Speaker of the House Representatives President Pro Temp Secretary of State Secretary of Treasury Secretary of Defense Attorney General All other cabinet secretaries

Executive Order An Executive Order allows the President to create a law without while skipping Congress. An Executive Order is a rule issued by the President to an Executive Branch agency (see below). The Executive Order has to be related to an agency underneath the President. These are highly controversial because there is no consent from Congress. Executive Branch agencies
