The Bodleian Libraries offer: 29 libraries including The Bodleian Library, Radcliffe Camera, Social Science Library, Law Library, Education Library, Philosophy & Theology Faculties Library, Radcliffe Science Library and more… www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/libraries Over 80,000 ejournals, 850,000 ebooks More than 12 million print volumes 1,000 items added daily to the collections 3,800 study spaces 600 PCs and 3 wireless networks Libraries in the Bodleian Libraries group include the famous  Bodleian Library plus 28 other libraries across Oxford including major faculty, department and institute libraries. Every second someone accesses our electronic collections. Every 14 seconds someone visits one of our libraries. Every 21 seconds someone borrows one of our books.

Legal Deposit College Libraries LEGAL DEPOSIT: Bodleian has been a library of Legal Deposit for 400 years One of the 6 Legal Deposit Libraries in the UK Legal Deposit has existed in English law since 1662, and it ensures that the nation’s published output is collected systematically and made available. Means that all UK publishers are legally required to deposit all of their publications in these libraries. Legal Deposit items (books and journals) CANNOT BE BORROWED, but they are available or can be ordered to most of the Bodleian Libraries including the Social Science Library Since April 2013 we have been receiving electronic items such as ejournals via Legal Deposit - only available on Bodleian Libraries PCs. COLLEGE LIBRARIES: Each of the Oxford Colleges has its own library – generally for the use of College members only ONE EXCEPTION = Nuffield College Library, which is open to all graduates at the University.

SSL House Rules

http://solo.bodleian.ox.ac.uk Search for Books and E-books Journals and E-journals Grey literature Digital collections Request SSL books out on loan Books in ‘Closed Stack’ Manage your account Renewals View fines Save and export references http://solo.bodleian.ox.ac.uk SOLO: Best starting point for searching for everything in the Oxford libraries – Bodleian Libraries and college libraries, print and online -Google “SOLO Oxford” first, save time later on Log in here (with your SSO) to request books and journals Log in here to manage your account (e.g. see how many books you have, and renew). SOLO LIVE HELP: If you have any problems searching or questions there is a live chat box on the front Instant response, staffed 9-5 Mon-Fri.

Common search problems I’ve searched SOLO but I can’t find any relevant publications I get too many ‘hits’ when I search online I need to find different kinds of information (journal articles, newspaper articles, data) and I don’t know where to start

Stay focused, keep a search log Beyond SOLO Reference ‘chasing’ You know relevant books and papers already Ask people Recommendations are a good start Not comprehensive Google / Google Scholar Arguably the largest ‘database’ Secret recipe search syntax – hard to replicate The Systematic Approach a) Plan your search, list your search words b) Identify relevant databases and websites c) Manage your references Stay focused, keep a search log

Search question: Main concepts Plan your search: Create a question Search question: Main concepts Do improved skills in information literacy increase the academic achievement of university students?

Plan your search: Keywords and synonyms Information Literacy Academic achievement University students Information skills Academic success Undergraduates Search skills Academic assessment Postgraduates Bibliographic instruction Academic result Graduate students User education Academic standard MSc students Educational achievement PhD students Educational assessment DPhil students Educational result Educational standard

Plan your search: Commands OR Information skills or search skills BROADENS SEARCH AND Information skills and academic success NARROWS SEARCH

Plan your search: More commands Truncation and wildcards e.g. feminis*, wom?n Search for a phrase by using quote marks e.g. “graduate students” Parentheses e.g. (academic OR educational) AND achievement Limit to particular fields e.g. title, abstract, keywords Apply search filters e.g. date, format

Research Question: Search string Search 1: information literacy “information literacy” OR “information skills” OR “search* skills” OR “bibliographic instruction” OR “user educat*” Search 2: academic achievement academic AND (achiev* OR success* OR assess* OR result* OR standard*) Search 3: university students “university student*” OR undergraduate* OR postgraduate* OR graduate* Final Search: Search 1 AND Search 2 AND Search 3

Research Question: Applied to a database ASSIA
