WIDE READING 1.10 NCEA Level 1 4 Credits

TASK: Listen to the song “Don’t forget your roots” by Six60 Read the Lyrics carefully and then answer the close reading questions in your designated groups. Feedback your answers as a class Choose TWO opinions that you discussed in your group and write up as a 1.10 style response Ensure you: Start with an “I” statement Support your statement with an example Explain your opinion and example in greater detail Make links to the theme of the text and how it may have altered your own views or future actions. How can you relate to this text?

EXEMPLAR PARAGRAPH: ACHIEVED The song “Don’t forget your roots” by the band Six60 is mainly focused on the idea that you should not forget your family or the values you were brought up with. A character I disliked in this song was the character of Jesse as she was very selfish and arrogant. For example when she left school the lyrics state that “Jesse thought she was all that…Left her mates at the gate as she walked away, Never to look back again, So she lost what she knows and what all is right, For a brand new image, and a world of lies”. Jesse forgot who she really was and turned her back on her friends and family.

EXEMPLAR PARAGRAPH: MERIT The song “Don’t forget your roots” by the band Six60 is mainly focused on the idea that you should not forget your family or the values you were brought up with. This had a very negative impact on Jesse. The lyrics also state that “relationships suffered. She lost the faith of all those who mattered”. This means that because of her arrogant and very naïve attitude she lost the support of those loyal to her. Jesse’s selfish nature is the reason why I dislike her. She made poor decisions and chose to forget who she really was. She rejected both her upbringing and her culture.

EXEMPLAR PARAGRAPH: EXCELLENCE The song “Don’t forget your roots” by the band Six60 is mainly focused on the idea that you should not forget your family or the values you were brought up with. This has a very negative impact on Jesse. The lyrics also state that “relationships suffered. She lost the faith of all those who mattered”. This means that because of her arrogant and very naïve attitude she lost the support of those loyal to her. Jesse’s selfish and foolish approach to her life and personal relationships is the reason why I dislike her. She made poor decisions and chose to forget who she really was and reject her upbringing and culture. I think that this is a really good lesson to remember in our own lives. I would never forget who I really was or abandon the people closest to me because I was leaving school and starting the next stage of my life. I can’t really relate to Jesse as a character as my friends and family are very important to me. I can’t imagine ever abandoning them the way she did. I hope that all young people take the lesson from this song which is to never forget your past for the sake of a new present or future. Your past will always be a part of you and makes you who you are.
