A Study on Learning English Through Movies-Targeting Vocational High School Students Susan Bill Gina Sophie 楊椀晴林盈璋 蔡奕加 潘怡安 Sophie → Gina → Bill → Susan Let’s begin our presentation our topic is ...... Hello everyone! Are you tired of studying the texts on learning English? Let’s escape from the boring books and look for some amusements through the movies. And do you know that watching movies is a good opportunity to learn English. Some students have been benefited from this efficient way. So, let’s take a look at how vocational students take advantage of movies.

Outline I. Introduction II. Research questions III. Thesis IV. Conclusion Our study includes four sections. Introduction, research questions, thesis and we will give you a conclusion.

I. Introduction Background: Students gradually lose their enthusiasm for learning English. The first part of introduction is background. Students gradually lose their enthusiasm for learning English. They suffer from the great amount of stress from teachers and parents. What’s worse, they are trying hard to memorize each word, sentence and grammar rule but without realizing the meaning of learning.

I. Introduction 2. Motivation: We want to look for more effective and interesting ways in learning English. This phenomenon raises our concern and interest. So we want to look for more effective and interesting ways in learning English in the hope of making a change.

I. Introduction 3.Literature: “ Students can get chances of learning English from the movies. “ (Lynn, 2005) Fortunately, according to literature review, we find a book entitled ”Content Area Reading at The Movie “ published in 2005. And the author (LYNN) says , “ We can get chances of learning English from the movies.

I. Introduction (b) “Students can improve listening ability by watching the movies.” (GJUN website, 2012) And we also find two literature reviews from the Internet. The first one is from GJUN website. It suggests that students can increase their listening ability by watching films.

I. Introduction (Je Suis Sabine, 2008) (c) “Students train their listening without subtitle and use English subtitle to learn vocabulary.” (Je Suis Sabine, 2008) In addition, Sabine, in 2008, posted an article on the Internet mentioning that without subtitle, students can train their listening ability. Also, they can learn more vocabularies by making good use of English subtitle.

II. Research questions For vocational high school students: RQ1. What is the percentage of learning English through the movies? After reading literature, we induce 4 research questions targeting vocational high school students for this study. The fist one is what is the percentage of learning English through the movies. ‘

II. Research questions RQ2. What language abilities can be enhanced through watching movies? The second one is that… what language abilities can be enhanced through watching movies.

II. Research questions RQ3. How do students use subtitles to learn English while watching movies? Next is how do they use subtitles to learn English while watching movies.

II. Research questions RQ4. From watching movies, what is the greatest effect on students’ English learning? And the last one is… what is the greatest effect of seeing movies on their English learning.

We will introduce our methods first, further divided into participants and instrument. And then, we'll have an analysis and discussion on the data we gathered.

IV. Conclusion Percentage: (a) finding: 47% watch movies (b) suggestion: Students make good use of movies to learn English. According to our study, we can understand that 47% of students learn English by watching movies. Surprisingly , the percentage is lower than we have expected. But ,we still suggest that if students want to learn English, making a good use of movies is a good idea. So we find that half of students don’t utilize the method of watching movies and they should be encourage to learn English through the movies.

IV. Conclusion 2. Ability: (a) finding: 73% listening (b) suggestion: Students who long for improving their listening ability can make it by watching movies As for the abilities , we know that 73% of students enhance their listening ability via watching movies. We find that literature review correspond with our survey. So students longing for improving their listening ability can make it by watching movies.

IV. Conclusion 3. Subtitle: (a) finding: 75% Chinese subtitle (b) suggestion: Students should use English subtitle or watch movie without subtitle. When it comes to subtitle , the literature claims that watching movies without subtitles is the most efficient way of learning English. However, most students prefer Chinese subtitles to no subtitles. Accordingly, we strongly recommend that students should use English subtitle or without subtitle as well.

IV. Conclusion 4. Effect: finding: 71% have deep memorization (b) suggestion: Students should make good use of the plot and conversation. As for the effect, 71%of students think that watching movies makes the language more impressive to them , so that students won’t forget words easily. We are vocational students as well, so we suggest students can enhance the impression of vocabulary and phrase by watching movies.
