What is a riddle ? A riddle is generally a question devised so as to require clever or unexpected thinking for its answer. Riddles may be considered a form of brain teaser. that makes them difficult to guess.

history Riddles came from old English poetry. Their literary ancestry dates all the way back to Platon and Aristotle. In ancient Greece, riddles were used as a cunning tool, to demonstrate wit and wisdom. Theater is another place where riddles show up. Shakespeare was famous for his works, which had a lot of riddles in them. For example, in Romeo and Juliet, Romeo proclaimed his love in a riddle for the audience to interpret.

Types of riddles Enigmas Conundrums which are problems generally expressed in metaphorical or allegorical language that require ingenuity and careful thinking for their solution. which are questions relying for their effects on punning in either the question or the answer.

Riddles are great for teaching ESL: they are a fun and motivating way for students to practice their listening, speaking, and critical thinking skills. Riddles, puzzles, and guessing games are fun, dynamic, and versatile ways to teach English to intermediate and advanced ESL learners. Whether teaching English one-on-one, to a small group or in the classroom, ESL teachers can use riddles to motivate students to improve their listening, speaking and writing skills.

Riddles require higher level critical thinking skills Why Riddles Make Good ESL Tools because they require students to practice a variety of language skills in order to find a solution.
