Welcome to Day 2

Day 2: Influencing and critical judgement   Aim: To develop analysis and influencing skills and critical judgement needed to deliver effective leadership

2.2.1: Engaging and influencing key stakeholders Learning objectives: At the end of this session, participants will be able to: Use a tool to analyse stakeholders’ involvement in a humanitarian response and to prioritise interactions with them Identify ways to influence key stakeholders in a response

Sample stakeholder chart Affected groups of people United Nations agencies National Government Regular Armed Forces National NGOs Civil Society World Bank Neighbouring countries UN Humanitarian Coordinator Red Cross & Red Crescent Donor countries Local Media Armed groups Host communities International NGOs Regional Government International Community Religious Groups / Organisations Clusters

Stages of stakeholder mapping Identify your stakeholders Analyse stakeholders by influence and interest Plan stakeholder communications and reporting Engage with your stakeholders

'Interest' measures to what degree stakeholders are likely to be affected by the programme, and what degree of interest or concern they have in or about it ‘Influence' measures the influence stakeholders have over the programme, and to what degree they can help achieve, or block, the desired change

Discuss and come up with your top tips for influencing people: What do we want from these stakeholders? What do they want from us? What motivates these stakeholders? What is the best way of communicating with them? What does this tell us about how we could influence them?

How would you… Influence your manager to buy copies of Sphere? Influence a local government official who is not supportive of NGOs in his/her area? Convince a donor to commit funding to drought relief?
