Future Earth – Our World in Your Hands Kids’ STEM Convention 2017 Future Earth – Our World in Your Hands

Science and Technology

Investigations - Categories Students must submit and nominate their investigations for display in one of the following categories; Design and Engineering Technology Digital Technology Scientific Investigations

Investigations and inquiry pedagogy Science ‘The intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behaviour of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment.’ English Oxford Dictionary Our students are scientists We need to assist our students understand and think like scientists For our students to thinking like scientists they need opportunities to do what scientists do….

Technologies –Process & Production Skills Creating designed solutions by: investigating and defining generating and designing producing and implementing evaluating collaborating and managing

Design and Engineering Technology Students will design/engineer a solution to a real world problem.

Digital Technology Students will design/engineer a digital solution to a real world problem.

Science Inquiry Skills Questioning and predicting: Identifying and constructing questions, proposing hypotheses and suggesting possible outcomes. Planning and conducting: Making decisions about how to investigate or solve a problem and carrying out an investigation, including the collection of data. Processing and analysing data and information: Representing data in meaningful and useful ways; identifying trends, patterns and relationships in data, and using this evidence to justify conclusions. Evaluating: Considering the quality of available evidence and the merit or significance of a claim, proposition or conclusion with reference to that evidence. Communicating: Conveying information or ideas to others through appropriate representations, text types and modes.

Scientific Investigations Students will design a scientific question and create an experiment to devise some proposed answers to the question.

Investigations - Awards Awards will be issued to the best investigation from each investigation category. Additional awards will be issued to; Innovation Award – Recognising the project that best displays imagination, initiative and different ways of thinking to create scientific experiments, useful products or outcomes. Preferred Futures – Individuals & Society – Recognising the project that displays critical and creative thinking to produce an outcome that would best benefit individuals, society. Preferred Futures - Environment – Recognising the project that displays critical and creative thinking to produce an outcome that would best benefit the local and global environment. Mathematics Award – Recognising the project that displayed the best use of mathematical thinking. Scientific Communication Award - Recognising the project that communicates an aspect of science in the most effectively.

Teacher PD Short videos (Less that 5 minutes) Aligned to curriculum Various aspects of the investigations eg ‘how to investigate a problem’, how to create a design brief etc Aimed at Student’s and teachers You tube links will be uploaded to the Kids STEM Convention web site.
