Community Outreach, Impact & Publicity District Convention 2017 Marie Hashitani, Service Projects Chair Kevin Myron, District Governor

The Importance of Image What would your Principal say if we asked them about Key Club? Image is everything! Membership recruitment & retention Emphasized presence on campus Further reach out from organizations Community recognition for service Increased school & community support 2

How Can We Improve Our Image? Community Outreach Don’t settle for status quo...be the catalyst! Impact Ensure service projects achieve our mission as an organization Publicity Image is dependent on publicizing the awesome service the club completes

Keep those questions in mind for our challenge! Community Outreach What are some recent service events you have participated in? Shout it out! But now consider this: Do they have impact? Do they accomplish our mission? Do they bring a feeling of fulfillment? Keep those questions in mind for our challenge!

Brainstorm Challenge Write down on paper or pull up a notes app You’ll have 37 seconds to put down as many organizations, causes, focuses that you could reach out to or have as a focus for a future project

Community Outreach Local organizations need volunteers too! Consider looking for: Non profit organizations Hospitals Senior homes Libraries Food banks Why volunteer locally? Make local connections Expand opportunities Spread the reputation of the club you serve

Start & Plan Service Projects Don’t overlook planning projects from the ground up vs. participating in others’ projects Service Projects Committee Spark discussion and action Signature Projects make clubs thrive Utilize YOF & CNH Foundation Grants No position is needed to be a leader!

Impact Project must have impact Utilize volunteermatch.org for local projects to participate in like runs/5ks Projects thereof should serve as supplemental What is the Major Emphasis? Projects that focus and assist on serving children Preferred charities & objects of Key Club Key Club Pledge: “to serve my…”

Tips on Impact Serve as Key Clubbers not as general volunteers Wear Key Club during all projects Ensure all members are prepared if they’re asked: what is Key Club? Execute a Signature Project Find a focus, plan an event from the ground up, publicize and share results Do you have? Share please!

Publicize, Publicize, Publicize How can you improve Key Club image on campus? Partner/communicate with ASB for projects Utilize weekly announcements Submit stories to your school newspaper After a project: write a story, take action shots Invite Principal/administration to meetings Promote at ALL school functions Wear Key Club!

Consider Publicity Consider this… How often do you use your social media in a day? How often do you check your phone in an hour? What medium do you use to contact other people? Using social media and messaging is a great outlet to remind members of events

Publicize before Projects Publicize events to increase attendance Tips on publicizing your events: Announce in advance (1-2 weeks) Create a sign-up form Remind them via closed Facebook, email, or text Personally invite members

Publicize after a Project! Without publicizing, opportunities are missed in improving the club’s image Create a recap video or short story for: Sponsoring Kiwanis Club school paper club social media Local newspapers (work with Kiwanis)

Put it All Together Utilize each point individually or even better...as steps to build the club! Community Outreach Identify a cause/project & plan Impact Ensure the project has vivid impact Publicity Publicize before AND after the event Action shots, stories, personal accounts Together, with this plan, we can improve our image throughout the communities and campuses of CNH!

Now, Lets Plan & Brainstorm With those around you, plan the following: Identify a focus/project Decide how to involve Kiwanis/School Admin or ASB/School Paper to promote the event Explain how you will publicize the project before AND after the event Groups will be called on, participation is rewarded!

? ? Questions? Comments? Concerns? Go for it!
