Conditionals If – clause Examples If you come home early, If you are late, Main clause we will go to the cinema. we will go without you. When the If – clause comes before the main clause, they are separated with a comma (,). When the main clause comes before the if – clause, we don’t seperate them with a comma (,). Example: If you come home early, we will go to the cinema. We will go to the cinema if you come home early.
Types of Conditionals 1st type If + Present Simple → i) Future Simple ii) imperative iii) can/must/may + bare infinitive use When something can happen in the present or future We can use unless instead of if ...... not. After unless the verb is always used in the Affirmative.
Types of Conditionals 2nd type If + Past Simple → would/could/might + bare infinite use When something cannot happen in the present or future We can use were instead of was
Types of Conditionals 3rd type If + Past Perfect → would/could/might + have + past participle use When something couldn’t have happened in the past It expresses regret
