Mobile Technologies Today

What is Mobile Technology? Mobile technology is exactly what the name implies - technology that is portable.

What are some examples of mobile technology? Examples of mobile IT devices include: laptop and netbook computers palmtop computers or personal digital assistants mobile phones and 'smart phones' global positioning system (GPS) devices wireless debit/credit card payment terminals

Mobile devices can be enabled to use a variety of communications technologies such as: wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) Bluetooth data networking services for mobile phones dial-up services virtual private networks

Digital divide in mobile technology fixed broadband penetration is growing rapidly and has reached around 15 and 10 percent in Europe and the Americas, it stands at less than half a percent in Africa. Internet use, in general, remains low in Africa especially, where only 5 percent of the population is online, compared to over 40 percent in Europe, the Americas, and Oceania. More statistics- By the end of 2007, almost one out of two people had a mobile phone. In Europe, penetration has surpassed the 100% mark. More than one out of 4 African and one out of 3 Asian have a mobile phone. . Source - http://www.itu.int/ITU-D/ict/statistics/ict/index.html

A high level of competition and a decrease in prices have been able to reduce the digital divide in mobile telephone, substantially. and availability of 3G is expected to change this over the coming years

Relevance to Education Many of the educational web sites as well as the larger LMS platforms now have mobile apps. This will provide educational opportunities in countries that do not have well developed broadband resources.
