Warm Up Summarize the information using a web graphic organizer. The center will be labeled “Types Of Maps”, and “Physical” “Political” and “Special Purpose” will be in three separate circles connected to the center circle by spokes. You will be given five minutes to provide details about each category of map. After five minutes, you will “turn and talk” to discuss their answers. Physical Types of Maps Special Purpose Political
Objective SWBAT understand how geographers study population and culture.
Like geographers, historians study population, culture, and the movement of people, ideas, and goods Why might historians be interested in studying such topics? (Turn and talk to discuss) Historians are interested in how these things change over time.
Population refers to how many people live in a specific area or place Population refers to how many people live in a specific area or place. Geographers study this in great detail and look at what sorts of people make up a population. Why do you think it is important to study population of areas? (Turn and talk) *Examines how fast a population grows or shrinks over time. *Measure population density, or the average number of people living in a square mile. A choropleth uses colors to show population density.
Populations can also change location Populations can also change location. The movement of people from one place to settle in another place is called migration. Can anyone infer any groups of people that have migrated to other places over the course of history?? (Turn and talk)
Culture is the set of beliefs, behaviors, and traits shared by the members of a group. Scholars study cultures by examining the language, religion, government and customs of different groups. What are some cultural traditions you and your family share? (turn and talk)
Throughout history, different people have met through exploration, migration, and trade. These meetings lead to groups sharing their cultures with one another. Can you recall a time you learned about someone from a different culture? What did you learn? (Turn and talk)
Guided Practice You will be provided with a map titled “Egypt: Population Density” As a class we will identify and define the map scale, the map key, and the cardinal directions.
Independent Practice Answer the following based on the map: How do you know this map is a choropleth? What type of map is a choropleth?
Group Work Group 1-What is the population density around the city of Cairo? Group 2- Around what physical feature is Egypt’s population density? Group 3-Why might you predict that most people are living by a river? Group 4- Which city has more than 5,000,000 people?
Exit Ticket What was the most important thing you think you learned today? What (if anything) are you still confused about? How can I help you understand?
Homework Why are geographers interested in contact between cultures?
