Advanced Pottery • As Advanced Pottery sections are small they have typically been run with Pottery 1. Students share their expertise and are empowered to assist with instruction. • The outline for this class is open and individualized to meet students’ interests in the media. The emphasis is on quality over quantity. • A materials fee is required. Assignments include:

Wheel Throwing Students begin the quarter advancing their skills on the potter’s wheel.

Under Glazed Piece This project entails the decoration of a functional or sculptural ceramic piece using under glazes. Under glaze methods allow fine detail difficult to achieve with glaze methods alone.

Combination Piece This assignment involves the creation of a functional or sculptural piece utilizing at least two different clay forming methods. In this example modeling and slab construction were combined.

Series of 2-3 Related Pieces Students are required to create two or three pieces that relate to each other. Written documentation of the relationship is also an expectation.

Involved Project of Choice Masterpiece Project Involved Project of Choice The student is empowered to build a ceramic piece that displays expert levels of technical and creative skill. •••••••••• see the next slide for more examples

•••••••••• Masterpiece Projects left - Modeled and hollowed clay sculptures have been a popular choice for an involved project. right – A ceramic fountain is shown in the building process. Fountains have been another popular selection. •••••••••• Masterpiece Projects

Technical Writing Assignment This assignment requires the creation of an instructional aid that assists in teaching a ceramic process. To the left is a portion of an assignment instructing clay modeling. This student provided visually supported directions on the process. To the right, the results of mixed glazes. The student mounted test tiles of possibilities with related data.
