Text Structure and Development of Ideas BP 4 Reading Game Piece 6.2 Text Structure and Development of Ideas

Key Idea and Details Objective Students will be able to compare and contrast the text structure of two different pieces of text, analyze how a text structure develops a specific concept, and analyze how ideas or claims are developed through the structure of the text.

Key Ideas and Details

Flip Slips Practice STEPS TO Skill or Problem How can text structure affect the readers understanding of a concept? STEP PREP Procedures Skill Language & Vocab Breakdown Prior Knowledge Textual Evidence Anticipation (1 Practice Problem Before Procedures )

Skill Focus The skill for this week is...... Compare and contrast the overall structure (e.g., chronology, comparison, cause/effect, problem/solution) of events, ideas, concepts, or information in two or more texts. Analyze in detail the structure of a specific paragraph in a text, including the role of particular sentences in developing and refining a key concept.

Skill Focus In other words, be able to analyze the way that the structure impacts the piece of text overall.

Vocabulary Copy the following words: Compare Contrast Analyze Structure Development Contribute Refine

Vocabulary Strategy: Word Analysis Under “My Definition,” write the definition for each word. Next, use the word in a sentence. Below “My Definition” under “Synonym” write two words that are similar to the vocabulary word. Finally, under “Antonym” write two words that are opposite.

Vocabulary Compare: to examine in order to discover likenesses. Contrast: to examine in order to discover differences. Analyze: breaking down information with supporting evidence.

Vocabulary Structure: the arrangement of elements into a pattern of organization. Development: the process of growth over a series of stages. Contribute: to have a part in bringing about something.

Vocabulary Refine: improve (something) by making small changes, in particular make (an idea, theory, or method) more subtle and accurate.

Prior Knowledge How can the text structure of two separate texts be similar? Why should text structure change depending on the concepts presented? How can an author use structure to engage readers?

Anticipatory Set What is the text structure of the following text excerpt? How do you know?

Anticipatory Set The Great Fire Jim Murphy Daniel Sullivan was the first to notice the flames coming from the O’Leary barn at around 8:30 pm on October 8. A problem with the alarm box made it impossible for the people in the area to call for the fire department. By 9:30 pm, the entire block was blazing. In another 3 hours, there were fires all over Chicago. The heavy wind coming from the lake only made the fire bigger. It would be another

Anticipatory Set day before the fire would be completely out. By that time, 17,500 buildings had been burned.

Steps Step 1: Read the assigned text. Step 2: What structure (organization) is used in the text? Step 3: Provide textual evidence to support your answer.

Steps Step 4: Describe the structural elements used in the text. Step 5: Read the second assigned passage.

Steps Step 6: What structure (organization) is used in the second text? Step 7: Provide textual evidence to support your answer. Step 8: Describe the structural elements used in the second text.

Steps Step 9: How are the structures similar in the two passages? Step 10: Provide textual evidence to support your answer.

Steps Step 11: How are the structures different in the two passages? Step 12: Provide textual evidence to support your answer.

Steps Step 13: What is the central idea in the first excerpt? Step 14: Select and copy a sentence or paragraph that refines the central idea.

Steps Step 15: Explain how this sentence refines the central idea. Step 16: What is the central idea in the second excerpt?

Steps Step 17: Select and copy a sentence or paragraph that refines the central idea. Step 18: Explain how this sentence refines the central idea.

Textual Evidence What is the text structure of the text excerpt? How do you know? This excerpt is in chronological order. I know this because of the order in which the information is presented. The words and phrases such as first, at around 8:30 pm, by 9:30 pm, in another three hours, and another day show that this story is being told in the order in which it occurred.

Flip Slip: What do you Remember? Remember: Rewrite this week’s skill in your own words. In your own words, define the vocabulary words from this week.

Flip Slip: What do you understand? Understand: Write the steps in chronological order. *How are the structures similar in the two passages? *What is the central idea in the second excerpt? *Read the second assigned passage. * How are the structures different in the two passages? *Describe the structural elements used in the text.

Apply Follow steps 1-18, using the given passage.
